you have heard about so many clocks- different types, different companies, mostly Analog & digital clocks are used nowadays. However, today we’re going to learn to make a chemical clock. Stay tuned, you are going to learn how to make a chemical clock by Askerweb. To make a chemical clock you have to know iodine clock reaction experiments as an easy home-made Science project. Let’s start the experiments.

Materials for iodine clock reaction:

  1. Vitamin C tablet (1000 mg, or two 500 mg tablets),
  2. 2 % Tincture of iodine,
  3. Hydrogen peroxide,
  4. Liquid laundry starch or corn starch,
  5. Warm water,
  6. 3 clear cups,
  7. Measuring spoon,
  8. Measuring cup,
  9. Resealable plastic bag,
  10. Spoon,
  11. Masking tape,
  12. Marker,
  13. Safety goggles

Process for iodine clock reaction:

  1. As iodine stains, we should remain careful & for additional safety, we have to wear safety goggles.
  2. Crush the vitamin C tablet to make it powder.
  3. the powder should be put into a cup & mix with 1/4 cup of warm water, and stir it to dissolve. Now use the marker & masking tape to label the cup as a “Vitamin C cup”.
  4. In the 2nd cup put 1 teaspoon of the same item as the 1st cup contains, now add 1 teaspoon of iodine to it and mark it as “Vitamin C + iodine”.
  5. In the third cup, mix ¼ cup of warm water, 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide, and ½ teaspoon of liquid laundry starch. Label this cup “Hydrogen Peroxide + Starch.”
  6. Now mix well the “Vitamin C + Iodine” cup & the “Hydrogen Peroxide + Starch” cup. Pour one mixture into another again & again until the two items well.
  7. Set the cups down and watch. After several seconds, you will see a big change in the liquid!
  8. After the experiment, pour the liquids down the drain with plenty of water. Do not keep the liquids.

Explanation for iodine clock reaction:

you may are thinking about why & how the reaction happens & what is the significance of the name “chemical clock”. This chemical reaction is known as the “iodine clock reaction,” because you can control the amount of time it takes for the solution to turn blue. This time is called the reaction time. During your mixture, there were two chemical reactions occur simultaneously. Iodine reacts with both Vitamin C and at the same time, iodine reacts with starch. Iodine and Vitamin C creates a clear liquid, but iodine and starch create a blue liquid. As soon as all the Vitamin C has been used up, the rest of the iodine immediately reacts with the starch to create a dark blue liquid. Increasing or decreasing the amount of Vitamin C is one way to control the reaction time.
